Taking a Dive into Nature to Learn Herbalism First Hand

Writer's picture: Oracle Of DelphiOracle Of Delphi

I've recently extended my studies as a student who is enrolled in Sage Mountain- The Science & Art of Herbalism. This opportunity has granted me time to slow down, and also appreciate and learn about the wild plants of my beautiful homeland of Canada, firsthand. I'm about half way through my studies, and soaking in every last minute of it. I'm not going to lie, part of the reason it is taking me so long, is because I am very dedicated to the craft. In one course, on tincture making, I have re-made tinctures consistently until I feel that I am ready to move on. What a journey.

In Alberta, our summers are short and sweet, and totally blissed out. The banks of the rivers in the city I live in are lovingly drenched in wildflowers, precious herbs, and wild plants this time of year. Everything is near to reaching a peak.

Wild Rose

I've never felt so intimately connected with plants until this summer. My appreciation, gratitude, and respect for plants reminds me I am on the right path. I can't wait to offer my vast knowledge, and insight to assist in healing. Immersing myself in the forest, the trees speak with me, and I am so full of joy - I am connecting with this aspect of myself again. The trees, these ancient spirits, reach out to me and teach me powerful lessons, or provide simple advice. My spirituality is renewed, each and every time I connect deeply to my core being.

Black Henbane

I have a special area, still inside the city, but far enough out that it remains fairly undisturbed that I venture to at least once a week. I've been biking there since the spring, and each time I learn something new about myself, and the plants. There are certain ones that have caught my eye, that I now check up on frequently. I thought I would share some photos of the unique plants I have come across this summer, and am connecting with! My favourites this summer have been black henbane, as well as wild rose.

As I practice wild plant identification, I post on my instagram the plants I come across and some of the information I have gathered from various herbalists/ authors, as well as my own personal insights. Click HERE to view some of the plants I have ID'd this spring & summer season in Southern Alberta! What plants have you learned about this summer?

Anything incredible you have stumbled upon?

What ways do you access healing in your community/ lifestyle?

Thank you for reading, and have a beautiful and blessed day! LOVE TO ALL!!

Melody
